Smoke em’ if you got em’.

No, I am not advocating smoking cigarettes, but I am going to talk a bit about cigars…at least a little basic cigar 101.

There’s actually quite a bit to learn when it comes to having an understanding of cigars. Today I’m just going to touch on the basics to provide you with a foundation upon which to build. The below is certainly not all encompassing, but provides a basic primer.

Common sizes

Cigars come in many sizes, below are some of the most common. The first number is length (inches) and the second number is thickness (ring gauge).

Petit corona 4.5x42

Robusto 5x50

Corona 5.5x42

Toro 6x50

Gordo 6x60

Lonsdale 6.5x42

Churchill 7x48

Common shapes

Just like sizes, there are many shapes. Some of the more common are below.

Parejo - the most recognizable shape, evenly rolled with a rounded end.

Torpedo - similar to the parejo but tapers to a point at the end.

Perfecto - tapers to a point at both ends.

Common wrappers

The cigar wrapper is a larger leaf used to wrap the filler. Good cigar wrappers will have no spots or stains, etc.

Connecticut - Grown mostly In Connecticut (but also Ecuador) this wrapper is a light brown and mild, usually with a woody or spicy taste.

Habano - darker than a Connecticut wrapper it tends to be much stronger and often spicy flavor.

Maduro - the darkest leaf, lends a slight sweetness.

Profiles

Depending on the construction of the cigar the profile can be mild or strong. One can be sweet or spicy. It may have notes of cedar, earth, vanilla or even chocolate. There are a ton of possibilities.
