This isn’t the definitive guide to ball caps. There’s no discussion of structured vs unstructured, high crown vs low, etc. - but it is the definitive ranking of closure types. Ok, it’s MY ranking of closure types and I’m sure this ordering will upset some and in certain circles cause me to be hung in effigy. So let’s get to it.
1. The fitted cap. The top of the food chain when it comes to ball caps. Made for YOUR head size. Not too tight, not too loose, perfect fit every time.
2. Flex - One size fits all (most). Find one that’s high quality and the comfort will almost equal that of a fitted cap in your size. Go cheap and the flex (stretch) might squeeze too much. Stick to quality.
3. Adjustable buckle. If you’re going to purchase an adjustable ball cap the buckle strap is the nicest and classiest. If anything dresses up an adjustable ball cap this would be it.
4. Adjustable Velcro. Not exactly the sexiest option. There’s nothing like that Velcro opening sound to send a message and that message is Walmart at 11PM.
5. Adjustable SnapBack. Or as I like to refer to it, the “crapback”. The bottom of the ball cap food chain. The bottom of the barrel. The fashion disastrophy. The economy class of ball caps. Nothing says cost-cutting, low rent, bargain basement, stocking stuffer or cheap date like a snap back.
