The microwave is the one night stand of the cooking world. Easy and uncomplicated. And sometimes that’s what you need. For those days when you don’t have the time, or inclination, to fire up the grill or the stove.
For those times when you just want something easy, it’s hard to beat the microwaveable steamer. It doesn’t require the commitment the grill does but will still let you walk away feeling satisfied.
The microwaveable steamer is one of the quickest and easiest ways to prepare a meal. And clean up is a snap. There’s not a lot to it, regardless of who makes it or where you buy it. It’s three pieces of plastic. A base that holds the water, a perforated tray and a vented lid. They do come in a few different sizes so make sure you get one that’s large enough to hold what you want it to.
Put a few table spoons of water in the base, then put your food on the perforated tray on top of the base and cover it with the lid leaving the top vent open to allow steam to escape. You can close the lid after it’s done to keep the food hot but leave it open while cooking.
Set the microwave to “steam” if you have that option, otherwise choose medium power. It takes about 4 minutes to steam fresh vegetables and about 3 to 4 minutes to steam a fish filet. Since I was cooking both at the same time (tilapia and fresh asparagus) I estimated the increased volume would take about 6-7 minutes. I was close. I set the microwave for “steam” and chose “fresh vegetables” as the option (since that required the most steaming time) and let the sensor do the work. Eight minutes later the microwave signal went off and I found myself with a perfectly cooked fresh, healthy, meal.
After transferring the food to the plate (or plates) just put the steamer right in the dishwasher. It’s that easy. Like the Fasta Pasta I reviewed previously, this little gem will make your life easier and is the perfect go to when you just want something quick and easy.
