Whites and winter

Updated: Jan 1, 2021

Summer is over, the hot weather is gone and the cold days are upon us. But I’m not putting my whites away and neither should you.

There are many competing theories regarding why people stopped wearing white after Labor Day - new money vs old money vs poor (those who could afford to go away to their summer homes and not have to work or worry about getting their clothes dirty in the city) or the end of vacation season and the return to work or school which brought about the packing away of the bright white linens which were replaced with heavier, warmer fabrics and darker colors to name a couple.

The reality is that there is no reason to pack away those whites. White is one of the most versatile colors that can be worn year round. It’s a natural color of the season, the color of snow and ice. It makes a great contrast to darker colors and can lend some brightness to an otherwise drab and dark outfit, like a white shirt under a navy sweater or a white sweater under a black overcoat.
